Wheat is the staple food crop of 43
countries and about 35% of the world’s population directly or indirectly
depends on wheat. About 20% of the total food calories and protein supply
of the world comes from wheat alone. India is one of the major wheat
growing countries in the world and within the country, the crop accounts
for ¼th of the total food grain production of the country. The crop yields
are low primarily due to lack of optimum plant stand, improper water
management, imbalanced use of fertilizers, ineffective weed control and
onslaught/incidence of pests and diseases. | |
